What CAN Be Done in Winter

Winter cleaning is possible, but selective. Gutter clearing is genuinely urgent — a blocked gutter during winter storms overflows and damages your fascia, soffit, and walls. That can't wait for spring. Biocide treatment on roofs works year-round and is actually more effective in winter because moss is dormant. Dormant moss absorbs biocide treatment better than active moss in summer, so a winter application can give stronger, longer-lasting protection. UPVC cleaning is fine in cold weather — low-pressure specialist cleaning doesn't depend on warm temperatures.

What to Avoid in Winter

Sealing your driveway in winter is a mistake. Sealer needs a surface temperature of at least 10°C and dry weather to cure properly. Winter conditions in Essex mean you'll rarely hit that window reliably. Even on a mild winter day, the temperature drops in the evening, and any moisture reactivates the cure process. You end up with a seal that doesn't bond properly and fails within months.

Driveway and patio cleaning in hard frost is equally problematic. When you pressure wash in frost conditions, water seeps into the joints and cracks between blocks. As temperatures drop overnight, that water freezes and expands, lifting and cracking your blocks. In spring, you're looking at damaged paving that needs repairs.

Why Essex's Mild Winters Make It More Workable

Essex rarely sees hard, sustained frost. We get cold snaps, but we're not locked in ice like northern England. That means you have working windows in winter where the temperature is mild enough and the weather is dry enough to proceed safely. In Harlow and Colchester, where inland winters can be colder, you watch the forecast more carefully. In Southend-on-Sea and the coastal areas, mild winter days are more common. You're not waiting months for spring — many jobs can happen in January and February.

Book Your Spring Clean in January or February

January and February are perfect months to book your spring clean. Spring diaries fill fast — by March, we're heavily booked. If you want your driveway, patio, roof, and gutters done before Easter or the May bank holidays, book in January. You'll lock in your preferred date, and if we get a mild window, the work might even get done before spring. Homeowners in Basildon, Brentwood, and Rayleigh who book in January typically get scheduled in February or early March — rather than waiting until May.

Roof Biocide Is Actually Better in Winter

This is one that surprises people. Roof moss is dormant in winter. Dormant moss is essentially passive — it's not fighting back against the biocide treatment. It absorbs the treatment more readily and the biocide penetrates deeper into the moss structure. By the time spring arrives and moss tries to grow again, the biocide has already done its work. A winter application of roof biocide gives you the best possible start to the season. Our written 3-year guarantee applies regardless of when we do the treatment.

When You Absolutely Should Not Pressure Wash

Don't pressure wash if it's actively raining, snowing, or there's a frost forecast within 24 hours. Water in cracks and joints will freeze overnight and cause damage. Don't wash if the surface temperature is below 5°C — the chemicals don't perform correctly at low temperatures. If you're unsure about conditions, ring us. We've been cleaning through Essex winters for years and know which days work.

FAQ: Can You Clean Gutters in December or January?

Yes, and in many cases you should. Autumn leaves block gutters by November. If you haven't cleared them by December, you're heading into the worst of winter with blocked drainage. January is absolutely fine for gutter clearing — our SkyVac system works from the ground regardless of temperature. We just need the gutters not to be frozen solid, which is rare in Essex. Don't wait until spring if your gutters are visibly overflowing.
